What is God like?

There are many opinions of what God is like, and there would be no way to be sure which opinion is correct without God's Word... and the cross.  Many times in the past, the God of the Bible is portrayed in a pagan way.  What I mean by that is:  it is taught that the Father is wrathful because we have sinned, and being a just God, He must punish those who have broken His Law.  This is a pagan way to look at the Father.  You see, in paganism, the human needs to appease or convince the higher power that they are worthy of a favor from this higher power.  So when confused Christians thank Jesus for stepping between themselves and the angry Father to change His mind and soften His wrath, they are misunderstanding the situation and are believing a twisted interpretation of God's Word.

The Truth is God the Father loves you, right where you are.  He is concerned for your well being because the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23) and you have sinned (Romans 3:23).  It is incorrectly taught that Jesus paid the price for your sins so the Father would be okay with not punishing and/or destroying you; but the Bible says that Jesus came to pay, not a price, but a ransom (Matthew 20:28, Mark 10:45, 1 Timothy 2:6).  A ransom is a price paid to a capture for the release of their captive.

No where in the Bible will you find that your sin (which is disbelief of His truth that results in disobedience) offends God.  Rather, it is sin alone that receives His wrath.  His hatred of the wages (results) of sin burns hot, because of His great love for you.  All through the Bible He pleads with people to turn from their sins and prosper, live, be saved; but time and again, even His own people choose their sin over Him.

Jesus is the Creator of the universe (John 1:1-3,14), He is the Creator of all things (Colossians 1:16) and He became a vulnerable human being, and lived a perfect life as and example and fulfilment of God's Law, by having a perfect relationship with the Father.  Then He sacrificed that life not to pay off the Father, but to pay the price for the redemption of your mind.  Humanity needs reconciliation with God, not the other way around.  The Father does not need to be convinced to love you, He has loved you from the beginning.  It was He who sent Jesus (John 3:16).  Since He does not change (Malachi 3:10) our sin does not change Him, but it does change us.  The cross also does not change Him, and again, it has the potential to change us, if we let it.

God's mind towards us is never wrong, and therefor the Cross can not correct His mind.  Our mind towards God can be messed up all kinds of ways, and the cross is the tool that has the potential to cleanse us, and straighten out how we think about God.  To be precise, God does not need correcting, we do.

In conclusion: God does not need any correction or convincing.  He is perfect, unchanging, and not only loving, but is indeed, love personified (1John 4:8).  There is nothing that can change Him (not even my sin) for He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  The cross shows without a doubt who God is.  As we contemplate the magnitude of what He did there, we can either believe
(which will soften our heart towards the Father and all life), or we can disbelieve, which leads to the hardening of the heart towards God and all life.  My friend, how will you react?  Will you not just now, put your trust in Him.  Seek His will for your life as you prayerfully study His Word, and then do as He says.  Allow the price He paid to mean something in your life for He loves you enough, that He did it for you.
